Is Selling Scrap Gold Better Than Repairing Jewellery?

This comes up a lot with broken chains, damaged clasps, and rings that no longer fit. There isn’t a single right answer, but there’s a reasonably simple way to think it through.

Start with whether you’d actually wear it again

If the piece has sentimental value or you genuinely like the design and would wear it once fixed, repair is worth pricing out even if it costs more than the item is worth in scrap terms. Value isn’t only financial.

If it’s a piece you haven’t worn in years, don’t like the style of, or inherited without much attachment to, the calculation changes. In that case it’s really a financial decision.

Compare the numbers

Get a repair quote from a jeweller and a scrap valuation from a gold buyer, then compare them side by side.

Repair costs depend on the work involved: a new clasp is cheap, resizing a ring is moderate, resetting stones or rebuilding a damaged section can get expensive. Jewellers price labour and materials separately, and labour is often the bigger cost.

Scrap value depends on purity, weight, and the current gold price, the same three factors that apply to any gold item. It doesn’t account for the workmanship in the original piece, only the metal itself.

If repair costs more than the item is worth once fixed, and you’re not attached to it, selling as scrap is usually the more sensible choice.

A middle option: partial salvage

Sometimes only part of a piece is damaged beyond repair. A chain with one broken link but an intact pendant, for example, might be worth separating: sell the chain as scrap and keep or repair the pendant. A jeweller or gold buyer can usually tell you whether this makes sense for a specific piece.

Don’t forget insurance and appraisal value

If a piece has been formally appraised or insured, that appraisal reflects retail replacement value, not scrap value or even resale value. It’s a common source of confusion. A $2,000 insurance appraisal on a ring doesn’t mean it’s worth $2,000 in scrap gold, since that figure usually includes retail markup, craftsmanship, and sometimes brand premium that doesn’t carry over to a metal-content valuation.
