Things to Know Before Selling Your Gold in Sydney

Sydney has a lot of gold buyers, from dedicated bullion dealers to pawnbrokers to kiosks in shopping centres. Prices and practices vary more than most people expect, so it’s worth knowing what to look for before you walk into the first shop you find.
Bring valid photo ID
NSW second-hand dealer regulations require licensed buyers to verify a seller’s identity before completing a purchase. A driver licence, passport, or other government-issued photo ID covers it. This isn’t optional paperwork, it’s a legal requirement, and a dealer who skips it isn’t operating properly.
Ask how the price is calculated, not just what the price is
A number on its own doesn’t tell you much. Ask for the breakdown: the karat they’ve tested your item at, the weight, and the current spot rate they’re using. A dealer who can walk you through that math in real time is generally more trustworthy than one who just states a final figure.
Watch for phone quotes that change in person
It’s a known pattern in this industry: a dealer gives an attractive quote over the phone, then lowers it once you’re standing in the shop with your jewellery already out. If you get a phone quote, ask for it in writing, and compare it to what’s actually offered when you arrive.
Get more than one opinion if you’re unsure
There’s no cost to asking a couple of dealers for a valuation before deciding. If the numbers are wildly different, that’s useful information. If they’re close, you can proceed with more confidence.
Understand what affects your specific items
Purity (karat), weight, and the live market rate are the three things that set the price of plain gold. Items with gemstones, branded pieces, or genuine antique or designer value are a different category, since they can be worth more than their gold content alone. A good buyer will flag this rather than pricing everything as scrap by default.
Know the process should be quick and visible
At a proper valuation, you should see your item weighed and tested, not just handed back a number. The whole process typically takes about ten minutes. If a shop wants to take your items into a back room out of sight, that’s worth being cautious about.
Payment should be straightforward
Cash or same-day bank transfer are standard. Be wary of delayed payment terms or being pushed toward store credit instead of the payment method you actually want.
